The South Putnam Track & Field team is recognizing THREE record-breaking athletes this season.
Bransyn Hanley (left), a freshman sprinter, broke our school's 51(!) year-old record in the 100m dash this season. Bransyn's blazing time of 10.94 seconds broke the 11.00 second standard set by Dan Hassler in the year 1973. HUGE congratulations to Bransyn, and we're looking forward to seeing his accomplishments on the track in the future.
Bailey Brickert (center), our senior hurdler, broke HER OWN school record in the 100m hurdles by racing to a blistering 15.45 seconds at the sectional meet. Bailey is a FOUR-time (read: undefeated) champion in the Putnam County AND Western Indiana Conference Championships, and she is competing in the regional meet Tuesday for her FOURTH straight year.
Ben Teipen (right), a senior thrower, bested our school's previous discus record (154' 2", set way back in 1990 by Jeremy Sadler) by throwing an incredible 157' 8.5" at the WIC Championship meet. Ben is a two-time county champ in that event, he is the reigning conference champ, and last weekend he won the sectional championship in that event, as well.
Congratulations to some AMAZING athletes representing South Putnam at the highest level. Let's see if a couple more records might just fall at the regional meets this week...
Congratulations to Mr. Champion and his middle and high school bands on a successful Spring Festival on Friday night! It was the result of a lot of hard work from students, Mr. Champion and everyone who set up, cooked, served, cleaned up and supported the work during the evening.
Our 8th grade students in Ms. Coke's class presented a showcase today! They created displays and spoke with knowledge about individuals from U.S. history.
We are continuing to recognize our middle school teachers who are doing great work each and every day for our students. Today, we'd like to turn your attention to one of our phenomenal social studies teachers, Ms. Emily Coke.
Students were ready and willing to share their thoughts about Ms. Coke. One student summed up their thoughts about her like this, "Ms. Coke is by far the most exciting teacher I've had so far." Other students said, "she's the best", "she's pretty cool", and "she's a great person." Many students appreciate the way Ms. Coke treats them. They say "she's very caring;" "she provides for us;" "she's so honest about everything;" "she's very inclusive," and "she's like my mom." Students also appreciate her engaging teaching style. They recognize that "she works really hard to do what she does", and that "she's funny, and she makes class enjoyable." In the classroom, they appreciate that "she doesn't dumb it down", and how "she gets to the point." Her students also LOVE that she finds ways to work with them to build their strengths while also helping them through their struggles. We should just let another student sum Ms. Coke up better than we ever could: "I really like her class. I learn a lot."
Thank you, Ms. Coke, for teaching your students with knowledge, passion and humor, and for modeling classroom community while setting high expectations.

South Putnam Middle School welcomes Jalyn Duff as our new 6th grade math teacher for next school year. Jalyn is described as possessing "a rare combination of expertise, passion and empathy that makes her an outstanding educator." In addition to teaching our 6th grade students, Jalyn will also be serving as our JV Girls Basketball Coach. We are all excited you are now an Eagle!
South Putnam Middle School welcomes Misti Neely as our new 7th and 8th grade science teacher for next school year! Misti creates an engaging classroom with many hands-on activities for students. She is described as cheerful, energetic, responsible and compassionate. We are all excited to have her join our team!
